for someone who lost their toddler in a drowning accident? This is a co-worker, who I casually chat with, she is not a Christian and there is a lot of anger toward God from her dh.

This is just my 2 cents. I would not say anything in the card. In a case like that, I would let the card do the talking (there is usually a printed message in the card) and sign it "Love, Patty" or something like that. Then pray for that family and let God deal with it. There are so many emotions in a case like this and it's best to let the dust settle. Just pray and make sure they have food.

"I love you. I am sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts. "

In that case I would simply write Love, (your name).
If she's angry, nothing is going to make her feel better. Let her know you care, leave it at that and keep an eye open for anyway you can be there for her. Pick up some extra workload, make a meal, etc.

Wow...that is a horrendous tragedy.
No words can not express their loss but I would extend my friendship to her. Imply that you will be there for her..she will have you to lean on on this tough time.
Nothing like being able to call a friend to cry, to just listen with us.

What a tragedy. Agreed with others on the card. As an aside, if you can in any way minister to this family to show them how Christians love with actions and not words, do it.
|
how about: "i am so very, very sorry for you loss. Please know that I am thinking of you and your family often. You are in my prayers. Sincerely, Mary Smith".

I agree with others that the words should be short and simple. Something like, "I'm so sorry for your loss and am praying for you. Love, The Smith Family."
It's hard to comfort people with words. The best thing you can do is shower them with love. Take meals to them, offer to cut their lawn, babysit other children if they have them, and do whatever you can think of to help them. Later, when they feel like talking, you can explain how much God loves them and that you love them because they're God's creation.
