Who has taught Pre-Algebra in 7th grade? Did you skip your publisher's 7th grade book or just get through it before 7th?

I am planning out the next couple of years and I'd like to move through 5th (which we've already started), 6th and 7th grade math courses during the next two years (5th and 6th grade) since we school year round and have already begun the next grade in our curriculum.

I didn't, but looking back, I saw so much repetition in 7th grade & Pre Algebra, that I think they could have easily been combined. I would probably go through the 7th grade end of chapter quizzes or reviews and only do the chapter if it's needed. Then, you could do the same thing with the first few chapters of Pre-Algebra since it's usually a lot of review. In most curriculums that I've seen, the last half of Pre-A is when a lot of new concepts are introduced to prepare for Algebra. At that point, you'd want to slow down.

We did that this year. We skipped R&S Math 7 and went into Saxon Pre-Algebra.

With a child who's good at math, you can easily do either. Remember that pre-algebra isn't a necessity. They didn't even have it when a lot of us were in school. In fact, when I was in middle school, they decided over the summer that they would start having algebra as an option for 8th graders, so a lot of us went straight into algebra in 8th grade, and our 7th grade teachers hadn't really been preparing us for algebra. We did fine.

We use Making Math Meaningful, and it goes straight from 6th grade to algebra.

Thank you! I guess part of it will depend on the curriculum we're going to use for Algebra. We'll get the next two courses done and then decide.

My 12yo is in 6th and doing pre-algebra now. She'll be doing algebra in 7th.

Tammy, that's interesting. I've hesitating doing it that far ahead but might consider it depending on how it's going. I'd like my kids to take college courses for their last two years of high school math so I thought it would be good to be at least one year ahead of the program, but if they are doing well, maybe doing Algebra in 7th would work out well. I think it just depends on the child. Some of mine are ahead, some on target, some behind. If the child is capable, why not?
